Fluval EDGE 6 Gallon Aquariums

If you have been researching the needs of Betta fish, or if you already own some Bettas, you will know that they really need access to the surface of the water to breathe. Fluval Edge aquariums are sealed on top and do not provide that access except for a small (around 4 inches square) area around the box in the back. That means a low-oxygen environment, in which Bettas can certainly survive, but in which they will not flourish or live a very long time.

This type of design is one of the very reasons Bettas shouldn't be kept in bowls. Since a bowl typically narrows at the top, the surface area is small. The design of Fluval Edge aquariums is similar in that only a small amount of exposed water is available for oxygen absorbtion and for a Betta to come to the surface.

The instruction manuals for Fluval Edge aquariums list Betta fish as one of the allowed fish species for their tanks, but my personal option is that it is not a design particularly suitable for Bettas at all. As stunning as these fish tanks are, and I'm a big fan of their beautiful design, I would put other fish in it or maybe shrimp.
