AmQuel and AmQuel+

AmQuel is definitely the product of choice for betta fish keepers. It makes tap water safe for bettas. You will need 1 teaspoon per 10 gallon to neutralize chlorine, amonia and chloramines as well as heavy metals. It should be used together with Novaqua, which also provides a protective slime coat.

What you may be interested in knowing is that many basic water conditioners do remove chlorine and chloramines, but they leave the ammonia ions behind. If you are not changing more than 20% of the water and your tank is well established, the bio filter will usually take care of the ammonia.

But if you need to replace more water and your tank is relatively new, it is better to use a product like AmQuel Plus, because it removes the chlorine and neutralizes the ammonia and nitrites, leaving those molecules bio available for the nitrifying bacteria.

The original AmQuel, or Kordon AmQuel even though also neutralizes the ammonia, does not leave it readily bio available for the nitrifying bacteria. Again, if your aquarium is well established, it will not matter, but use the newer formulas in AmQuel+ (or AmQuel Plus) for the less established aquariums.

You may wonder why the original AmQuel is still being produced and sold, if there is an improved version. The reason is that there are those loyal to the original product, and they are used to what it accomplishes. Also, AmQuel+ naturally has a nontoxic odor (now being suppressed with odor eliminators for the AmQuel+ product) that some people found objectionable.

This product is ok if frozen, just thaw at room temperature. Use extra aeration during the first hour of use. Do not dose more than once in a 24 hour period.
